Description: Motivational Interviewing is a process of engaging a consumer in the process of change. Motivational interviewing is not directive but it is structured, rather it is the provider guiding the consumer to recognize the need for change. Once the consumer recognizes the need for change, the provider continues to guide the consumer to select methods, techniques, and skills to make changes. Motivational Interviewing requires the provider to listen for talk that is about change or motivational statements such as recognition of the problem, expression of concern about the problem, direct or implicit intention to change behavior, and the consumer’s optimism that they have the ability to change. This course is for providers working with consumers to change behaviors. Motivational Interviewing has been successfully used in many environments, such as
• Mental health, including co-occurring disorders and dual diagnosis;
• Primary healthcare, such as diabetes, weight issues, nutrition, medication adherence, and treatment of other chronic diseases such as HIV;
• Addictions and misuse disorders including gambling, substance misuse, and smoking; and
• The criminal justice system.
Any provider working with a consumer to change behavior may find Motivational Interviewing to be an effective method.
