Objectives: After completing this course, participants should be able to:
• Identify at least five medications used to treat substance abuse, substance withdrawal, and ADHD, including the therapeutic effects and the side effects associated with medications in each category.
• Identify at least five anti-addiction and psychostimulant medications and the benefits of those medications.
• Name the different medications for treating the addiction to, and withdrawal from, different drugs, such as alcohol, nicotine, or opiates.
• Describe the “off-label” medications used to treat ADHD.
Description: This course presents an overview of psychiatric medications used in the treatment of psychiatric disorders. These medications are also referred to as psychotropic medications. We will cover categories of medication, therapeutic effects, side effects, precautions, and some of the issues associated with adherence to medication treatment. Module 3 focuses on medications for substance abuse disorders including alcohol, nicotine, and drugs; ADHD; neurological disorders including Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s; sleeping problems such as narcolepsy, appetite stimulation for bulimia and anorexia nervosa; and sexually transmitted infections.
