Clock Hours: 1

• Describe preventative strategies to make the environment as safe as possible and set consistent expectations for clients
• Recognize the basic interactions between staff members and clients
• Define what constitutes a safe environment
• Explain what constitutes safe personal dress
• List general guidelines for all agitation episodes
Description: The purpose of this three module training course is to train counselors and other mental health staff members in proactive interventions for aggressive behavior and can be used in a variety of settings and situations involving agitated or potentially aggressive behavior. Proactive intervention means to decrease aggression or agitation before it gets to the point that physical constraints will be necessary. This training module is based on the “Techniques for Effective Aggression Management (T.E.A.M.)” program, which was developed at the Louis de la Parte Florida Mental Health Institute at the University of South Florida in 1988.
This module deals with preventative strategies that can help make the agency or setting a safer place for both the clients and the staff. These actions can be taught or performed prior to any clients being seen and can be completed outside of agitated or aggressive behavior to prevent negative behavior from occurring.
