• Identify types of crises that may occur
• Describe the dichotomy of crisis
• Describe the characteristics of crisis
• Identify the phases of a crisis
• Evaluate stress reactions during a crisis
• Assess situations to determine if they constitute a crisis
Module Two
• Learn general statistics about suicide in the United States
• Explore principal clinical factors associated with suicide
• Learn three environmental factors associated with suicidal behavior
• Learn five personal and environmental factors relevant to acts of violence
Module Three
• Identify the steps of crisis intervention
• Outline the process of assessing a crisis
• Outline the process of triage in a crisis
• Describe the characteristics of an action plan
• Describe the duty to protect
• Identify a variety of responses and intervention skills used with a person in crisis
Description: Behavioral healthcare workers, regardless of position, are frequently confronted with individuals experiencing a crisis. Emotional turmoil can be a stimulus for growth or a cause of long term harm. One should not take for granted that crisis counseling is a natural skill for anyone with a caring attitude. What the crisis counselor says does make a difference in how the person copes with a crisis and how the person learns new coping strategies.
