Objectives: At the completion of this program, participants should be able to:
• Identify the differences in symptom manifestation of Major Depressive Disorder amongst pre-school age children, children, adolescents and adults
• Know the rate of Major Depressive Disorder more than doubles from childhood to adolescence and often occurs in a waxing and waning course
• Identify the key factors in the diagnostic evaluation process for Major Depressive Disorder
• Know it is uncommon to treat a youth with Major Depressive Disorder who does not also have another diagnosis
• Understand the complications associated with the treatment of Major Depressive Disorder in youth and the 4 factors which place youth at a higher risk
Description: This course reviews the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry’s Practice Parameter for Depressive Disorders among Children and Adolescents as well as more recent research. This course presents the prevalence and clinical presentation of Major Depressive Disorder in child and adolescent populations in order to help clinicians become better skilled at diagnosis among youth. This course utilizes a case study to help learners apply information to a real-life scenario. This is a one hour course and targets case managers, social workers and other social service professionals in the child services and related fields.
